Rockwall Rolls Past Royse City

By Bobby Summers

Royse City- The Rockwall Yellowjackets needed the turnover to tone down the Bulldogs last Friday night. The Yellowjackets got more than enough ball exchanges to gain their first win of the season and to keep the Bulldogs in the right hand column of the season records.

Royse City had little problem moving the football on Rockwall throughout most of the ball game, they just could not move it where it really counts and that is past the goal line.

Three second half interceptions interrupted Royse City drives that were well on their way to paydirt. Each turnover added fuel to the fire and Rockwall held on for a 21-10 score that could have easily been reversed.

The cross county rivalry that has continued for over 80 years provided plenty of action on both sides of the ball and the crowd on each side of Royse City ISD Stadium got their money worth as both football teams fought tooth and nail to gain the first victory of the season.

Royse City won the coin toss to begin the contest and 11 plays later Sean Pollock put the Bulldog on the scoreboard with a 37 yard field goal. Also the Bulldogs chewed away 4:41 of the opening quarter clock to gain their first lead of the 2011 season.

Pollock wanted the ball back, so he onside kicked the ensuing kickoff and then he recovered the loose football as Royse City stunned the Yellowjackets in front of the Bulldog’s home crowd.

Four plays later, Rockwall sent a message back to Royse City as Andrew Hinckley picked off the first of his three interceptions on the night.

The Bulldog defense kept relentless pressure on Rockwall. Led by sophomore defensive end Jared Loftis, Royse City contained the Yellowjackets for 14 plays inside Bulldog territory until Rockwall quarterback Wesley Davis finally sneaked in from two yards out to score the Yellowjackets first touchdown of the game. Andrew Hinckley kicked the extra point and with just 29 seconds remaining in the first quarter Rockwall took a 7-0 lead.

With ice cold nerves, junior Bulldog quarterback Wes Brookshire looked into the teeth of the Yellowjacket defense and quickly gained 13 yards on the quarterback keeper following the ensuing kickoff. On the second play of the second quarter Brookshire hooked up with Jake Horbacz for a 10 yard gain. The young Royse City quarterback then called his own number again for an 8 yard pick up followed by a personal foul 15 yard penalty against Rockwall. Then from 17 yards out, Brookshire found his favorite target again and hit the bulls-eye on Horbacz’ chest for a touchdown. It took the Bulldogs just 6 plays and 2:52 to travel 64 yards to recapture the lead. Pollock nailed the extra point and the Bulldogs were leading 10-7 with 10:37 to play in the first half.

Rockwall caught the Bulldogs still celebrating and then quarterback Davis, found Dylan Campman on a 46 yard pass completion to the Royse City 6 yard line. Davis then stepped off those final 6 yards as he raced around his right end and cruised into the corner of the endzone for a Rockwall touchdown. The Bulldogs only had 1:02 to celebrate their second and last lead of the game as Hinckley kicked the Yellowjackets extra point with 9:35 remaining in the first half.

The 14-10 Rockwall lead would stand throughout the remainder of the second period even though Damion Foster recovered a Rockwall fumble that was caused by Bulldog Clint Sherman with 4:19 to play in the first half.

The Bulldogs then began a 90 yard drive and Brookshire completed passes of 10 yards to Michael Webb, 9 yards to Torrell McQueen, 9 yards to Horbacz and another completion to Webb for 20 yards. The Bulldogs were on their way to the endzone again when they lost a fumble at the Rockwall 15 yard line.

The frazzled Yellowjackets then kneeled to end the first half as they held tight to the 14-10 lead.

Rockwall received the second half kickoff and recovered the Bulldogs onside kick attempt at their own 50 yard line. Eight plays later Rockwall’s Davis threw a 21 yard touchdown pass to Zach Berryman followed by the point after kick by Tyler Bonny gave the Yellowjackets a 21-10 lead.

Both teams locked horns the remainder of the game. Royse City drove back to midfield on their next possession before Hinckley pulled in his second interception on the Royse City 49 yard line.

It was three and out for Rockwall as Bulldogs James Gilbert, Damion Foster, Ryan Perry and J.R. Arredondo recorded tackles or assists forcing the Yellowjackets to punt.

The Bulldogs would enter the final quarter driving 50 yards to the Yellowjacket 35 yard line before Zach Farrow intercepted a pass to halt the Royse City possession.

The Bulldog defense again forced a three and out on Rockwall with tackles by KD Edwards, Elijah Huntley and Perry.

With 1:40 remaining in the game and the Bulldogs driving once again, Hinckley completed his player of the week game with his third interception as Royse City’s possession was stopped at the Rockwall 35 yard line.

The Bulldogs will travel this week as they take on the undefeated Frisco Liberty Redhawks at Frisco’s Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30
