Sulphur Springs, Texas- The Sulphur Springs Wildcats took no prisoners on their way to a three way tie for the District 13-4A title. The Wildcats (5-1, 7-3) locked in their playoff opponent as well by handing the Royse City Bulldogs(3-3, 3-7) a 53-13 loss.

The Wildcats scored freely in the first half to take a 36-0 lead. Sulphur Springs quarterback Justin Owens threw three first half touchdown passes and the Wildcat defense scored another on a blocked fourth down punt and then reserve quarterback Blake Macek came in to toss another touchdown pass to give Sulphur Springs a very comfortable halftime lead. The Wildcat touchdown passes covered 9, 20, 45 and 45 yards respectively in the first half.

Royse City’s offense did light up the scoreboard in the second half with touchdown passes of 17 yards to Jake Horbacz and 10 yards to Torrell McQueen with one extra point kick by Sean Pollock. But it was too little, too late for the Bulldogs as the Wildcat defense held the Bulldogs to 259 yards of total offense in the game.

Senior Bulldog receiver Jake Horbacz led all Royse City receivers with 7 catches for 89 yards and one touchdown. Defensively the Bulldogs were led by Elijah Huntley with 10 tackles and by Damion Foster’s interception and return of 12 yards in the game.

Sulphur Springs on the other hand passed for 246 yards and 5 touchdowns. They also added 158 yards rushing in the District 13-4A season finale.

The passing effort by Bulldog junior quarterback Wes Brookshire did push him pass the 2000 yard mark for the season. Brookshire is playing in his first varsity year at quarterback and he has completed 182 of 306 passes for 2068 yards, 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Brookshire has also led the team in rushing with 108 carries for 533 yards and a 4.9 yard per carry average.

Leading receivers for Royse City this season have been Jack Horbacz (51 for 605 yards) and Michael Webb (55 for 695 yards).

Defensively the Bulldogs have been led by Damion Foster (86 tackles), J.R. Arredondo (65 tackles), Elijah Huntley (64 tackles), Ryan Perry (58 tackles) and Jared Loftis (46 tackles).

The Bulldogs will travel to Mount Pleasant this Thursday night for a 7:30 kickoff against the Kilgore Bulldogs for the Bi-District Championship.
