Royse City Rambles Past Carrollton 24-16

Playoff Berth Clinched

By Bobby Summers

Royse City traveled to Carrollton’s Standridge Stadium last Thursday night for their sixth win of the season. The Bulldogs (6-3 and 4-2) defeated the Carrollton Newman-Smith Trojans 24-16 in a battle that clinched a playoff spot for Royse City.

The Bulldogs locked up the playoff spot with one game still remaining to be played in the season. Royse City fans can now start making plans for a trip to Gerald Ford Stadium on the campus of Southern Methodist University. The Bulldogs will play Denison at 7:30 pm on Friday, November 14.

Even though the Bulldogs held a 24-3 fourth quarter advantage in the game against the Trojans, the sparse Royse City crowd had to hold their breath in the end as Newman-Smith (2-7 and 2-4) mounted a last minute comeback.

Bulldog’s quarterback Richard Morrison had another spectacular night passing, completing 15 of 23 attempts for 240 yards and three touchdowns.

Another statistic shared with kicker Kollin Padon was the punting game the Bulldogs had. Padon booted a 74 yard punt in the game that landed inside the one yard line. Morrison’s quick kicks were extremely effective as well and the two punted 5 times averaging 50 yards per punt.

It was a different night of Bulldog football to say the least. The final stat sheet found Royse City with 23 running plays, 23 passing plays and punting 5 times.

The Bulldogs however did what they do well and that was score early. It took Royse City just 6 plays to travel 64 yards to open up the scoring. Morrison passed to Eric Schneider for a 43 yard touchdown with 8:59 to play in the first quarter. Padon kicked the extra point for the 7-0 lead.

Royse City capped off a 25 yard drive with a 20 yard field goal by Padon with 9:06 to play in the second period to boost the Bulldog lead to 10-0, before the Bulldogs next possession that began on their own 20 yard line. Three completions to Schneider and a 12 pass to Ryan Fedric set up a 19 yard run by Frank Dave. The drive however sputtered and ended with an incomplete pass to the end zone on fourth and five at the Trojan 13 yard line.

Cameron Nichols intercepted a pass to kickstart the third period and stop the Trojans second half drive at the Bulldog 23 yard line. Royse City however would have to wait until late in the third quarter to put together another substantial drive.

That drive came with 4:54 remaining in the third period. Morrison found Devin Bryant for a 34 yard gain that set up a 6 yard touchdown pass to Ryan Fedric. At the 3:04 mark the Bulldogs took a 17-0 lead.

Newman-Smith still showed signs of life in their offense when they drove to the Bulldog 13 yard line. With 11:22 to play in the game, the Trojans were on the board with a 30 yard field goal by Phillipe Ichter.

The Bulldog defense responded on the Trojan’s next possession. Facing fourth and one on the Bulldog 43 yard line, Royse City’s defense behind Oscar Hernandez and Ernesto Vargas stopped the Trojan’s on what turned out to be a game deciding play.

On the very next play, Morrison escaped the grasps of several Trojans, rolled out of the pocket to his right, found his target just short of crossing the line of scrimmage and fired a strike to Justin Jacobs. The pass was back across the field and was only about 10-15 yards. Jacobs catch and run however covered 57 yards for the touchdown. Padon kicked the extra point and the Bulldogs were sitting on a comfortable but not stable 24-3 lead with 6:24 to play in the game.

It took just 3:08 for Newman Smith to respond. The Trojans took that amount of time to march 81 yards in 7 plays. Newman-Smith quarterback Aldo Quiroga threw a 6 yard touchdown pass to Al Lasker. The extra point kick was good by Ichter and the Trojans trailed 24-10 with 3:16 to play in the game.

The Bulldogs recovered the onside kick, but the staunch Trojan defense forced the Bulldogs to punt.

With 2:46 to play in the game the Trojans began at their own 13 yard line and drove 87 yards in 9 plays before Quiroga hit Lasker again on an 11 yard touchdown pass. The kicked failed but with :54 remaining in the game, Newman Smith was within striking distance as the score read Royse City 24 Newman-Smith 16.

The Trojan’s next onside kick was short of the ten yard requirement and the Bulldogs took over on the Trojan 46 yard line. Royse City kneeled in the “Victory Formation” to end the game.

Royse City will host Carrollton R.L. Turner this Friday at 7:30. This will be the final season game at Royse City ISD Stadium.
